Historic Christianity

Certain truths have historically been believed by all true Christians. Although some of them from time to time have been called into question by some who call themselves Christians, these truths were taught by Christ and the Apostles, believed by the martyrs, and held to through the centuries. They are still true today.

  • The Bible is completely true. In John 10:35, Jesus said, "The Scripture cannot be broken." Paul wrote in II Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God," that is, God breathed out the Scriptures. It is His Word.

  • God created the heavens and the earth. This is taught throughout the entire Bible. The Apostle Paul wrote, "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible" (Colossians 1:16).

  • Jesus Christ was born of a virgin and is the Son of God. The prophet Isaiah wrote, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son" (Isaiah 7:14). The Apostle Matthew wrote, "When as his mother was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost" (Matthew 1:18).

  • Jesus died on the cross for our sins and literally rose from the dead. He said He came "to give His life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28). Peter wrote that He "bare our sins in His own body on the tree" (I Peter 2:24). Paul wrote "that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures" (I Corinthians 15:4).

  • Salvation is a "gift of God; not of works lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9). To be saved requires an acknowledgement of our need to be saved, and our absolute dependence on Christ as our Saviour. It is a gift, and does not require good works or sacraments. Paul wrote, "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness" (Romans 4:5).
