What Must I Do To Be Saved?"
OUR NEED -- The first thing we must do to be saved is actually
recognize that we need to be saved. Every person in this world is a
sinner, and is separated from God. "For all have sinned, and
come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "Sin"
was an old archery term that meant "missed the mark". We
have all "missed the target" of God's holiness. Until we
recognize that we can never please God on our own, and we have sinned
against Him and are under His judgment, we can never be saved. We
must stop looking at other people and saying, "I'm not that
bad;" instead we must look at God and what He expects and
honestly admit, "I really am that bad in God's eyes." We
need to recognize that we do wrong even at times when we don't want
to, because sin has made a slave of us. The jailer in Philippi had
come to this realization and knew he needed help before God.
IN CHRIST -- Paul and Silas answered, "Believe on the Lord
Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31). Believe on
the Lord -- He is God. Believe on Jesus ("Jehovah Saves")
-- He is the Saviour Who died to take the punishment for our sins and
rose again to break the power of sin and death. Believe on Christ --
the promised Messiah, the One Who was promised in the Old Testament
prophecies to deliver us from our sin.
HIM -- "But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name"
(John 1:12). Salvation is a free gift of God. "For by grace are
ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God: not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9).
But a free gift is of no benefit if the recipient does not receive
it. For example, a person may need to sit down, then sees a chair,
and says, "I'm sure that chair can hold me." If he doesn't
sit down, the chair does him no good. Similarly, the person who
recognizes his need and believes the truth about Christ is not
necessarily saved. We must accept what He did as being for us, and
trust Him to free us from our sin and enable us to follow Him.
What must you do to be saved? This is the most important question you
will ever ask, for your answer determines your relationship with God
and your eternal destiny. If you need more information or desire help
with this in any way, please contact Rev. Jon Gleason on 01592 744363
